ATHLETICS FAQS

CAN I REGISTER?
For the 2025-26 season athletes who are born after 2023* are eligible to register with Gungahlin Athletics Club.
*Tiny Tot's must have had their 3rd birthday prior to registration, if born in 2023 they will only become eligible, depending when their birthday is, for the second half of the season.

Senior Athletes (aged 17+) can also register with our club with either a Adult Community or Adult Competitive registration.

WHAT AGE GROUP WILL MY ATHLETE BE IN?
For the 2025-26 season the age group for an athlete is the age they will be turning in 2026. For example, if your child is turning 7 in 2026 they will participate in the Under 7 age group for the entire season.  Please refer to the above Age Calculator to determine the Age Group.

When registering you do not need to nominate the age group as this will be calculated automatically when you enter the birthdate/s. You will be required to provide proof of age, either by scanning and attaching a copy of their birth certificate or Passport or by showing the original when picking up your registration pack. Note: Gungahlin Athletics Club do not retain a copy of this documentation, documents loaded onto the system will be deleted after they have been approved.

WHEN DOES THE GUNGAHLIN ATHLETICS CLUB SEASON START?
Our first meet of the 2025-26 season will be mid October 2025 and will run for up to 18 weeks with a break over the Christmas/New Year period. Our key season dates from 2025-26 including carnivals, are available on our CALENDAR.

We provide a COME AND TRY ATHLETICS opportunity for athletes interested in trying out Athletics before they register.

WHEN ARE THE WEEKLY MEETS?
Our meets are held every Saturday morning during the season.

8.20am - TINY TOTS SESSION - Under 4, Under 5 boys and girls
Expected finish time 9.15am.  Tiny Tots will undertake up to 5 stations of game based activities.  Race times and placings are not recorded as the program is designed for skill development.

8.20am - JUNIOR SESSION - Under 6, Under 7 and Under 8 boys and girls
Expected finish time 9.45am. Four events each age group.

9.50am - SENIOR SESSION - Under 9 - Under 17 boys and girls; U18+ Adult & Open male & female
Expected finish time 11.30am.

From week 2 onwards we also run a 1500m race (Under 11 and older) and race walks (Under 9 and older) in between the two sessions, commencing at 9.45am (after Junior Session). Marshalling for these races will be at the round track at 9.40am.

WHERE ARE MEETS HELD?
Our training and Saturday morning meets are held at Amaroo Playing fields, off Horse Park Drive in Amaroo (behind the Amaroo School).  Check out our map for details on where to meet and the location of the events.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO WHEN WE ARRIVE?
Check out our Arrival Guide for details of what you should do when you first arrive at a meet - whether you're an Athlete, Volunteer or Age Group Manager.

WHAT IS THE COST OF REGISTRATION?
The Registration page has our full information about the fees and some initial information about registering. From 2025-26 season we are excited to announce that we will be extending our program to include U4 athletes (they must have had their 3rd birthday before attending) in our Tiny Tot program and having two streams of Adult registrations (Adult competitive and Adult Community).

We provide a Come and Try Athletics opportunity for athletes interested in trying out Athletics before they register.

CAN I PAY IN CASH?
Our Club is 100% CASHLESS which means no cash for registration, uniforms or at the canteen.  Registrations are all done online and you can pay with a credit card or PayPal.

DO I NEED TO STAY WITH MY CHILD (UNDER 18) AT ATHLETICS?
Yes! Not only is it an insurance requirement, our club is entirely run by volunteers. So along with supervising your athletes we also need help to run the events and ensure everything goes smoothly. Volunteers include Age Group Managers, parents helping Age Group Managers on events, track helpers and canteen helpers.

DO I NEED TO HELP AT MEETS?
Yes, Gungahlin Athletics Club is run solely by volunteers and we do ask adults to assist at meets, though it is often not a requirement to help each weekend. Each season as part of registration families will need to sign up to a Duty Roster, where they nominate specific jobs or tasks they can help with. Often adults help out more regularly and it's greatly appreciated!

All athletes benefit when our meets run smoothly with lots of support - it helps to reduce the time taken to complete events and makes everyone's morning more enjoyable!

WHAT EVENTS WILL MY ATHLETE DO?
At Gungahlin Athletics Club we offer the full range of Events (running, throws, jumps etc) for our athletes.  At each meet athletes will participate in a mix of these events with up to 5 events at each Saturday meet.  As athletes move into older age groups we progressively add events to ensure they are age appropriate (for example, hurdles are offered from Under 8s and older, High Jump from Under 9s, and javelin and triple jump are offered from Under 11s).  We run a rotating program for our weekly meets. Programs for the forthcoming weekend are published onto the Meets page and on our social media pages.

Our Tiny Tots (Under 4-5) participate in a modified introductory program designed to develop their fundamental movement skills of running, walking, jumping and throwing through fun and enjoyable activities. The aim of the program is to improve the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of children through an age appropriate, active and free play-based approach that is engaging and stimulating.  This is the only age group where boys and girls participate in the same group.

Our Under 6 athletes participate in a combination of activities on the standard program with one On Track activity.  The special program called On Track, offers a combination of track races (always the most exciting!) and games and activities designed to develop the core skills children will use for events as they get older (jumping, throwing, starts etc).

WHICH ADULT REGISTRATION SHOULD I TAKE OUT? ADULT COMMUNITY OR ADULT COMPETITIVE?
The type of adult registration you register for depends on what level you want to participate at - whether your focus is to participate socially and stay active or compete at events across the ACT and Australia.  Below is a summary and there is more information available on our Club page.

The Adult Community registration is for adults who would like to be physically active, attend our Club meets and enjoy athletics without the pressure of competitive meets.  Perfect for parents of our athletes, people who loved athletics as a kid, wanting to try it out for the first time, or our athletes who are aging out of Little/Junior Athletics and want to keep attending with their friends.  This registration gives you access to all the club facilities and meets, however it does not allow you to compete at any of the Capital Athletics events, with the exception of the Relay Carnival.

Our Adult Competitive registration is aimed at those adults who wish to predominantly compete in Capital Athletics events such as the Summer/Winter series and Championships events. This membership also allows you to attend our Club meets and enjoy the social side of athletics.

IS THERE A UNIFORM?
We have club shirts, singlets, crop tops and hats which are available for purchase every Saturday, prices start at $29.00. It is compulsory to wear the Gungahlin Athletics Uniform at our Saturday meets for registered athletes.  Tiny Tots have the option of wearing either a Gungahlin Athletics shirt or purchasing a plain red shirt from a retailer.  Second hand uniforms (shirts and running shoes) can also be purchased at club meets.

All athletes, except for our Adult Community members, must wear their registration number and age patch on their shirt/top at each meet.  This ensures we can record all results accurately and identify our athletes correctly in any photos. You will receive these in your registration pack at the start of the season.  They can be attached in various ways such as, safety pins, sewn on or using iron on hemming tape.

Athletes who choose to compete in Capital Athletics carnivals, championships or other events are required to have a Gungahlin Athletics shirt, singlet or crop top and wear black shorts or pants when competing.

DOES GUNGAHLIN ATHLETICS CLUB OFFER COACHING?
Gungahlin Athletics Club has some qualified coaches at the club who volunteer their time to coordinate our TRAINING sessions on Thursday evenings throughout the season. The Gungahlin Athletics Club  training sessions are included in the registration fee so there is no extra cost for athletes who attend. On the TRAINING page you can find more information about what is offered each week.  If you would like to hire a personal coach we suggest using the coachathletics.com.au/find-a-coach page to locate an accredited coach.  You might also be interested in your athlete participating in some of the development options run by Capital Athletics.

HOW CAN I ACCESS MY ATHLETE'S RESULTS?

All results from a Saturday meet can be found in the ResultsHQ system.  You can expect that most results will generally be available by the end of the weekend - our volunteers have to upload the track results and manually enter the field results.  From time to time the volunteers have to check something with our Chief Recorder and it may take a couple of extra days for some results to be confirmed.  Once set up you can log in and view all your athletes records for both current and previous seasons.  You can also view any Personal Bests (PBs) for athletes as well.  Timing Solutions looks after this system and has provided some Help documents for using their system.  Please note: some of these options may not be available due to individual club setups.

I DON'T KNOW MY LOGIN FOR GETTING THE RESULTS
When you first registered you should have been sent an email (from [email protected]) about your User Account.  Try using the email account that you used when you registered, this should be the same one you're receiving emails from us at, and if you don't know the password select "Trouble Logging In" to reset your password.  If you are still having trouble please follow the instructions provided by Timing Solutions in the first instance.
