So you’ve registered for the Relay Carnival - now what!
When: Sunday, 23rd November 2024 Arrival Times: U6-8: 8:20am; U9-12: 10.45am; U13-17: 2pm Where: Woden Athletics Track, Ainsworth Street, Phillip Parking: You can park along Ainsworth & Kitchener Streets. Additional parking is available on Bootle Place or at the CIT (cnr Ainsworth and Albermarle Place). Food and Drink: There will be a BBQ, drinks, canteen and coffee van available on site.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
Allow enough time to get a park - parking will get busy.
Make sure your athlete/s is wearing theirGungahlin uniform - black shorts/pants; Gungahlin Athletics top; Age Patch and Registration number. Note: The Age Patch and Registration number should be showing the sponsorship details.
Sunscreen and Hats - with high temperatures expected for Sunday please make sure you have sun protection for yourselves and your athlete/s.
You may like to consider bringing a picnic rug and/or chairs to sit on; water and food. There will be a small Gungahlin tent and there is some shade available at the seated area or under trees behind the tent.
AT THE CARNIVAL
When you arrive please check in at the Gungahin tent. There will be Gungahlin committee members in attendance to help guide you through the process/es.
Make sure athletes are near the Gungahlin tent before their race starts - athletes will be called to the marshalling area 15mins before the race start and there will only be 2 calls for each race.
Athletes and officials will be the only people allowed to enter the competition area. You can walk with your athlete to the marshalling area and after cheering them on, meet your athlete coming off the field near the finish area.
EVENTS For information about the Carnival including maps, program, rules etc. please refer to the Capital Athletics Relay Carnival Booklet. There are 4 types of relay that athletes will compete in, depending on their Age Group:
Slalom relay is where athletes weave between 10 posts/cones that are placed 3m apart. They will run an outward leg, turn and complete an inward leg before passing the baton to the next athlete.
Shuttle relay is where athletes line up opposite one another eg, 2 at each end. The runners run from one end to the other passing the baton.
Circular relay is where athletes run the same distance (eg, 100m) around the round track, passing the baton at the end of each leg.
Swedish medley relay is where athletes run a total of 1000m undertaken in different lengths around the round track, passing the baton at the end of each leg. The legs are run in the following order: 100m, 300m, 200m, 400m.
Under 6-8: 4 x 50m shuttle relay, 4 x 100m shuttle relay, slalom relay (4/team) Under 9-10: 4 x 70m shuttle relay, 4 x 100m circular relay, 4 x 200m circular relay Under 11-14: 4 x 100m shuttle relay, 4 x 200m circular relay, 4 x Swedish medley relay (100m, 300m, 200m, 400m) U15-17 & Open: 4 x 100m shuttle relay, 4 x 200m circular relay, U15-17 & Open mix: The teams can be made up of athletes from U15, U16 or U17 age groups. U15-17 Swedish medley relay will be a mixed gender event (U15-17B/G, minimum of 1 boy/maximum of 2 boys).
UNIFORM All athletes MUST wear theirGungahin Uniform (Gungahlin Red/White athletics top & black bottoms (shorts/pants)) with their chest number and age patch clearly visible. All sponsorship must be clearly visible on the chest number and age patch.
RELAY TEAMS The Gungahlin athletes that have registered for the Coles Relay Carnival have been emailed out to participating families. Please note that composite teams where Gungahlin did not have four athletes register in an age group are still being prepared.
PARENTAL ASSISTANCE The Parent Roster for the carnival has been emailed out to participating families. All parents on the roster should confirm acknowledgement of their duty. If your name is not on the roster you should be prepared to help out on the day if there are unexpected absences.
