GUNLAC WEEKLY NEWS - 18th NOVEMBER 2020

18/11/2020

We had perfect weather for our meet on Saturday - lots of brilliant PBs on the 100 metres and 200 metres, the tracks were super fast! Well done to our Under 9s on completing their first 800m you all did an amazing job. Also great job to our Under 8s with their first hurdles races - they seemed to enjoy it! A big thank you to all our set-up and pack-up helpers, canteen helpers and track officials.
Two Club Records were broken in week 2, both in the 400 metres - Ethan C (under 11) and Jaime B (under 16). Both Ethan and Jaime broke multiple records last season and they are starting off season 2020-21 in great form again! Congratulations also to Cooper Jenner who broke the U14 Hurdles record in Week 1.

This week's program

The program for this Saturday is now available. A few things to note:
  • Under 9s are on high jump for the first time and this will be a technique session. Age Group Managers will be sent a program of activities. The focus will be on the athletes learning the correct technique and working out their take-off leg and side. This will be scissor jumps with the flexi-bar.
  • Under 11 girls will be Triple Jump for the first time, we have allowed two pits for this age group so they can work on their jumps before measuring.
  • Some groups in Under 7s - 10s will have Turbo javelin. This will be set up on the top oval in the space where junior discus usually is. A fact sheet on this event is available.
Duty Roster
Reminders for this week's roster have been sent out. We will need extra help in the following areas:
  • High jump set up - UNDER 9, UNDER 12B and UNDER 13/14B parents your athletes are on High Jump this weekend! We have 3 mats to set up so will need extra help from 9am to set-up mats and also the shades for the kids. High jump is now on the Top oval.
  • Hurdles track recorder - two track helpers needed on Hurdles for Senior groups.
  • Round track discs helpers 2nd session - Under 9-17 parents we need a disc person to help on 800, 400 and 200 races. This person hands out the place discs to athletes.
We know that some parents find helping on tracks a bit intimidating, however most find its easy once they have been given instructions. We always have Committee members or experienced parents at each track. No officials = no races!

Thursday Training
Thursday Training this week will be HIGH JUMP - both scissors (U9-10) and flop technique (U11 +). These are always really useful sessions for athletes early in the season to learn and practice good technique. Under 7s and 8s will be doing throws and some sprints and games with our junior coaches. Training starts at 5.15pm Thursdays at Amaroo oval.

Equipment Officers NEEDED!!!
Our season is well underway but we are still keen to get one or two people as equipment and grounds officers. The role is essentially to manage our equipment, keeping a record of stock, ordering new equipment as needed and communicating any grounds issues to the ACT government.
This role is NOT to do the whole set up and pack up every week, though often equipment people will help coordinate what gear goes out and will be available to check any gear which needs replacing. Currently this role is being covered by other Committee members who are already very busy so we would love someone to come in and take it on! If you are interested or have questions email us at [email protected].
